The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, declared early elections following a significant legislative setback concerning emergency measures on the housing crisis. The elections are scheduled for November 29. This announcement comes as public dissatisfaction over housing affordability grows, further fueled by public protests after the televised eviction of an elderly woman in Madrid.
Recently, right-wing opposition parties successfully defeated two emergency decrees in Parliament. These decrees aimed to curb evictions and real estate speculation. The defeat led to speculations about Sánchez potentially advancing the national elections, initially planned for next year.
In a televised statement, Sánchez emphasized the need for a stronger progressive coalition in Parliament to address Spain’s major challenges. He stated, The time has come, therefore, for the Spanish people to decide what future you want for yourselves and for your country.
Sánchez has led Spain since 2018, marking him as one of Europe’s longest-serving leaders. He is recognized internationally for his progressive stance on migration, support for Palestine, and criticisms of US and Israeli actions against Iran. Under his leadership, Spain experienced notable economic growth.
Domestically, Sánchez faces challenges due to legal cases involving members of his Socialist party and family, who deny any wrongdoing. Additionally, he struggles with managing the border crossing incidents in Ceuta, involving thousands of Moroccans, which resulted in a humanitarian crisis.
Since 2023, Sánchez has governed with a minority coalition, partnering with Sumar. His reliance on small parties has limited his legislative success. Known for his resilience in elections, Sánchez now confronts a challenging electoral contest against the conservative Popular Party, which holds the most seats in Parliament.
The dissolution of Parliament awaits Cabinet approval, which Sánchez has arranged to convene.
