Steelers Triumph in Historic NFL Game Amid Paris Protests

1 day ago 0

The Pittsburgh Steelers emerged victorious against the New Orleans Saints during the NFL’s inaugural game in France. The event, held despite a week marked by protests and civil unrest in Paris, concluded smoothly.

Concerns Over Civil Unrest

Throughout the week leading up to the game, questions arose due to violence, looting, and vandalism in the city. These incidents reflected widespread dissatisfaction with living costs and public service quality. President Donald Trump voiced his concerns about the situation as the Steelers-Saints game approached.

Despite these challenges and the postponement of a major soccer game, the NFL maintained its schedule. The league, along with Paris Saint-Germaine, did not flinch in the face of ongoing disruptions.

“If I’m being honest, I have not seen enough. I’ve seen some graffiti everywhere, but I haven’t seen anything myself,” remarked a fan outside the Stade de France.

Fans’ Experiences

OutKick connected with fans who faced potential disruptions in Paris. Most reported minor inconveniences, although no serious incidents occurred.

One fan from Mexico drew parallels with protests back home, saying, “Mexico is almost the same. We have a bad government. I don’t care about the problems in France. It’s OK for me. I came for the game.”

Heightened security measures were evident. The NFL collaborated closely with Parisian police, French authorities, and the U.S. State Department to ensure safety. Meetings at the Élysée Palace with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Saints owner Gayle Benson, and Steelers owner Art Rooney II focused on security plans.

Some fans found the experience of visiting Paris less than ideal. “There are some stores I want to go to that are boarded up, or have cracks in their glass,” a fan noted. Despite this, the city’s charm remained intact.

“Have they gone too far, the protestors? When they start tearing stuff up, yes sir. When they start burning vehicles, yeah, that’s too far.”

Successful Outcome

Goodell had assured that the game would proceed smoothly, a sentiment supported by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In retrospect, this held true, as the event unfolded without incident.

The Steelers-Saints game marks the beginning of a series of international NFL games in 2026. Upcoming matchups include Cincinnati Bengals versus Atlanta Falcons in Madrid and New England Patriots against Detroit Lions in Munich, among others.
