Sports have long united Americans, bridging political divides. Stephen A. Smith, a prominent media figure, advocates for maintaining this unity. During a July 17 episode of “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on SiriusXM, broadcast from the Fanatics Fest in New York City, Smith voiced concern over politics interfering with sports. He highlighted how WNBA star Caitlin Clark is depicted by the league and media, urging fans to resist divisiveness.
In a dramatic game at Moda Center, Portland, Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever aimed for a three-pointer against the Portland Fire. Smith remarked, “This is America. Despite divisions and challenges, this nation remains a destination for many worldwide. Politicians attempt to infiltrate and divide the sports realm. We can’t allow that to happen.”
“When the (NBA) commissioner calls it ‘political ping pong,’ it’s troubling. Caitlin Clark’s talents should not be politicized,” Smith asserted.
Smith criticized NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s comment about Clark’s situation as “political ping pong,” showing concern for potential negative impacts. Smith fears this political atmosphere might encourage division.
He advised Caitlin Clark and WNBA players to unite to address her burgeoning popularity positively. Additionally, Smith called on lawmakers to refrain from meddling in sports discussions. “Caitlin Clark is not the enemy. She’s part of the team. The WNBA commissioner must foster unity and tell politicians to focus on their responsibilities.”
The WNBA has yet to respond to queries from Fox News Digital. Various political figures have commented on Clark’s situation. Rep. Tim Burchett critiqued her treatment in the league, describing it as the “thug treatment.” Rep. Brandon Boyle clashed with Jemele Hill online over perceptions of Clark’s marketing, stating the WNBA “detests Clark,” fueling further discussions.
President Donald Trump expressed his views recently, praising Clark as a “wonderful basketball player” and criticizing Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix Mercury for a hard foul against Clark, which resulted in a one-game suspension. “She was treated harshly,” Trump observed, addressing the incident.
Smith continues to use his extensive platform to hold politicians accountable, criticizing actions from both political parties. Recently, he criticized President Trump for alleging involvement in the New York Knicks’ loss in the NBA Finals and challenged the spread of democratic socialism within the Democratic Party.
