Stephen Curry’s Controversial Deal with Li-Ning Under Scrutiny

The U.S. Department of Labor has reported that since 2016, Uyghurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang have faced serious human rights violations, including forced labor. The Chinese Communist Party allegedly uses coercion as part of a broad control strategy. These allegations have been supported by both U.S. and international sources.

Curry, considered a global figure beyond his basketball achievements, has signed a reportedly lucrative 10-year deal worth $400 million with Li-Ning. This move places his reputation alongside a company criticized for its human rights record.

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act was enacted to prevent goods made under forced labor conditions from being imported into the U.S. This legislation reflects America’s stance against funding abuses abroad through market convenience.

Curry’s deal follows warnings concerning Li-Ning’s practices. In 2022, Li-Ning merchandise faced bans in the U.S., and further investigations into the brand are underway.

Cultural elites are often selective in their stance on justice. Acts of courage, like the Women’s Tennis Association withdrawing from China over human rights concerns, stand in contrast to the silence when issues involve large markets like China.

Endorsements hinge on trust. Involvement with a company embroiled in human rights allegations compromises that trust. The NBA and its audience deserve better than this ethical dilemma.

Ambassador Sam Brownback, former U.S. ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, and Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player and human rights activist, emphasize that sports platforms can and should adhere to ethical standards.
