Authorities in New York City arrested a man on Monday who attempted to avoid police by swimming across a lake in Central Park. The New York Police Department (NYPD) initially sought to apprehend the individual, a suspect in a petty larceny case in Harlem.
During the arrest attempt, the 23-year-old suspect fled into Central Park. He entered the Harlem Meer, which is an 11-acre body of water located at the park’s northeast end.
As the man swam across the lake, an NYPD helicopter hovered above, monitoring his movements. Law enforcement divers subsequently entered the water, secured the suspect, and arrested him.
The apprehended suspect was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
