Taylor Sheridan’s Texas Ranch Purchase Shaped His Career Decisions

1 hour ago 0

Taylor Sheridan, a 56-year-old writer and director, had initially planned to retire after his work on ‘Yellowstone.’ However, the purchase of a second ranch in Texas changed his trajectory. While appearing on the ‘Rodeo Time’ podcast, Sheridan explained how his $330 million acquisition of the Four Sixes Ranch prevented him from retiring and resulted in an exclusivity deal with Paramount.

Originally, Sheridan had envisioned a laid-back retirement, focusing on horses and maintaining a small herd. He said, ‘I was set up to retire. I was going to be done after ‘Yellowstone.’ I’d bought the ranch in Weatherford, and I paid cash. I didn’t owe anybody anything.’ But buying the Four Sixes Ranch meant he couldn’t quit his day job just yet.

‘I knew that if I bought this ranch that I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while,’ Sheridan noted, emphasizing the commitment needed for the property.

Before proceeding with the purchase, Sheridan ensured that the ranch’s general manager would remain to handle daily operations. He also confirmed that his son was ready to take responsibility for running the ranch in the future.

The Four Sixes Ranch served as a filming location for several episodes of ‘Yellowstone’ Season 4. Sheridan met the previous owner, Anne Marion, during filming arrangements. After her passing, Sheridan learned that the ranch was not left to her daughter and was set to be divided and sold.

Sheridan recalled, ‘But before they did that, she had asked if they would try to find someone who would maintain her vision.’ The search led them to Sheridan.

Faced with the $330 million price, Sheridan candidly said, ‘Well, boys, I’m a little short. I don’t have, in fact, I’m about 300 million short.’

Sheridan’s relationship with Paramount changed following these events. He had previously resisted signing an exclusive deal with them but reconsidered when the opportunity to purchase the ranch arose.

‘Paramount had been after me to make an overall deal. They were terrified that I would leave them for greener pastures, which I probably was,’ Sheridan admitted. ‘But once this happened, I called them and said, “I think I’m ready to make an overall deal.”‘

Sheridan led a group of investors to finalize the ranch’s purchase, closing the deal on January 21, 2022. Following this new agreement with Paramount, Sheridan created numerous shows, including ‘Mayor of Kingstown,’ ‘1883,’ ‘1923,’ ‘Lioness,’ ‘Landman,’ ‘Tulsa King,’ and ‘The Madison.’

One of ‘Lioness’ stars, Michael Kelly, praised Sheridan’s talents in an interview, expressing his admiration for Sheridan’s work. ‘I think he’s truly a standalone talent,’ Kelly said, highlighting Sheridan’s unique storytelling abilities.
