Cary Epstein, a lifeguard from Jones Beach, detailed the courageous rescue efforts of 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams. The young hero navigated the treacherous waters of Santa Cruz, California, to save a struggling child caught in massive waves.
In a separate incident, New Jersey authorities have charged a man following a tragic boating accident. Kevin Wells, aged 40 from Warren, New Jersey, faces serious accusations. His late-night crash in Barnegat Bay resulted in the death of a 26-year-old passenger and critical injuries to two others. The crash occurred along the Jersey Shore in late July and ended in vehicular homicide charges against Wells.
State police reported responding to the crash near Toms River Township. Just before 11 p.m. on July 25, they were called to a collision site along the Intracoastal Waterway. The vessel, a 32-foot Boston Whaler, struck a channel marker. Among the passengers was Michael T. Bereheiko, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Michael T. Bereheiko, a 2017 graduate of Watchung Hills Regional High School, excelled in both offense and defense on the varsity football team. Known affectionately as “Bear,” he pursued a career as a heavy diesel mechanic.
The crash left two other passengers, Steven Pochick and Nicholas Cherasaro, with serious injuries. Sarah Stulh suffered minor injuries. In light of the incident, Wells remains held without bail pending a court hearing.
Authorities noted this summer’s fatalities included similar incidents. Another fatal crash implicated Jennifer L. Pearson in August. She operated her vessel allegedly under influence, resulting in a collision that caused her son’s death.
A third tragic event involved Stephen Schneider, whose alleged intoxication led to a crash that claimed the lives of his young grandchildren. Such incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding water safety and the impact of impaired operation.
