Mourners in Tehran gathered to honor the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attending his funeral on Saturday. These tensions erupted alongside the United States initiating new military strikes against Iran. President Trump’s remarks cast doubt on the stability of the existing cease-fire between the two nations.

Internal disagreements within Iran’s leadership surfaced before these recent developments. A faction within Iran supports negotiation with Washington, favoring dialogue. This group includes President Masoud Pezeshkian, who criticized the U.S. for ‘bullying rivals, creating obstacles, and cheating.’

In contrast, a minority hard-line faction strongly opposes any agreements with the United States. Their anger targeted the Iranian president and the diplomatic team involved in the discussions.

Tensions between these factions grew more pronounced during Iran’s weeklong observance of Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral. The funeral ceremonies took place across five cities in Iran and Iraq. Ayatollah Khamenei’s body was in Najaf, Iraq, when American military strikes commenced. His burial was scheduled for Mashhad, Iran, on Thursday.

Throughout the week, as the nation mourned, hard-liners directed criticism at government officials. These internal and external challenges coincide with national observances honoring the late leader.
