Tensions Rise Over President Trump’s SAVE America Act

The political debate surrounding President Donald Trump’s SAVE America Act has intensified, shifting from internal GOP disagreements to public exchanges between the White House and Senate leadership. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted on Thursday that Trump’s patience with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., is waning in relation to the election security legislation.

Leavitt remarked, “His patience is running out. He wants to see as much of the Save America [Act] passed as possible by the August recess.” She emphasized that this aligns with what she believes the American people desire.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune did not respond favorably to Leavitt’s comments about Trump’s dwindling patience. Leavitt reiterated, “The American people elected overwhelmingly Republicans to lead. The House did its job. The Senate needs to do its job, too.” She called for the Senate to act promptly.

The political atmosphere in the Senate presents challenges that differ from Leavitt’s remarks. Despite this, Thune has drawn criticism from conservatives who express frustrations about the SAVE America Act both online and within the White House.

The SAVE America Act faces strong opposition from Senate Democrats, who argue it may disenfranchise numerous voters. Unlike in the House, where Republicans can advance legislation without Democratic support, Thune would need the backing of Senate Democrats to pass the bill.

Thune remarked, “Well, maybe she or somebody else ought to get on the phone and get the votes, right? It’s 50 around here.” He suggested targeting Democrats for opposition and rallying Republicans who might be persuaded.

Tillis opposes the SAVE America Act, stating, “We should use reconciliation to fund the government… It’s dishonest to say SAVE Act must pass. It won’t be implemented by the election.”

When queried on Leavitt’s criticism of Thune, Tillis expressed, “I have 1,000% confidence in Thune, and anyone in the White House doubting his leadership isn’t fit for their role.”
