Trump’s Influence Tested in Texas Primary Runoffs
Today’s Texas primary runoffs spotlight the impact of President Donald Trump’s endorsement. His support has been polarizing, especially in the contest between State Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has Trump’s backing, and GOP Sen. John Cornyn, noted for his mixed allegiance to Trump.
Paxton’s past controversy, including impeachment and later acquittal on bribery and corruption charges, has unsettled some party members concerned about the Senate seat’s security. In the March 3 primary, Cornyn edged Paxton, securing 42% over Paxton’s 41%.
Cornyn, despite Trump calling him a friend, faced criticism for wanting to eliminate the Senate filibuster and his initial hesitation to back Trump in 2016. He eventually endorsed Trump in 2024.
The Paxton-Cornyn face-off is a part of several heated primaries in Texas.
