Texas Judge Denies New Trial for Karmelo Anthony Convicted of Murder

DALLAS — In a case that drew national attention, a Texas judge has denied a new trial for Karmelo Anthony. Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder in June and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, last year.

The denial was issued by Judge Michael Chitty in a concise order after a two-day hearing near Dallas. Chitty cited a review of evidence and arguments without further elaboration.

An appeal is planned, according to Anthony’s attorney, Russell Wilson. Wilson stated, “Our commitment to our client has not changed. We will continue to advocate vigorously on his behalf through every lawful avenue available.”

Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder in June and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

During the hearing, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis commented, “We respect, and expected, the court’s decision denying the motion for a new trial. The jury’s guilty verdict stands, and we remain confident in the process. Every defendant has the right to appeal, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the Metcalf family in the painful wake of last week’s hearing.”

The defense argued that trial judge John Roach’s courtroom rules restricted public access to the proceedings. Furthermore, it was noted that Roach provided a post-trial interview stating the jury “got it right.” Roach defended the rules as necessary for a fair trial, with prosecutors supporting his conduct.

The case gained significant attention due to social media narratives framing it in racial terms. Anthony is Black while Metcalf was white. Despite this, both sides instructed jurors that race was not a factor.

Jurors dismissed Anthony’s self-defense claims regarding the confrontation with Metcalf at the track meet.
