The Illusion of Legitimacy: Military Rulers in Civilian Disguise

2 days ago 0

The phrase ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness’ aptly describes the troubling scenario when military leaders cloak themselves in civilian garb to feign legitimacy.

The transition from military ruler to civilian leader is a recurring strategy. It starts with a power grab by a military figure. Following this, political adversaries face imprisonment or exile, silencing dissenting voices.

Subsequently, these rulers stage superficial elections. In an attempt to legitimize their rule, the military leader abandons their uniform, opting for a suit and tie. Adopting the title of ‘president,’ they aim to present a democratic facade to the world.

This pattern is evident in Myanmar under the leadership of Min Aung Hlaing. After a speech at the Union Parliament in Naypyidaw on July 31, he exemplifies the strategy of military leaders seeking validation through civilian roles.

Such actions raise concerns about genuine democratic processes and accountability. The challenge is ensuring real democratic governance rather than allowing power to remain concentrated in authoritarian hands.
