Many Americans face difficulties in achieving restful sleep. According to cognitive neuroscientist Yousuf Aslam, the root of this issue could go beyond simple bedtime habits. Aslam explains that the brain’s capacity to sleep hinges on feeling secure enough to switch off, with unresolved stress and anxiety potentially keeping individuals in a state of heightened alertness.
Understanding Sleep Regulation
Aslam, who has expertise in neuromechanics and neuroscience, outlines the complexity involved in sleep regulation. It encompasses neuroscience, psychology, neurochemicals, and physiological processes. Biological mechanisms play a role, but emotional factors are equally critical. Two primary biological systems regulate sleep: the circadian rhythm and sleep-wake homeostasis.
“The circadian rhythm, our internal 24-hour clock, is governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus,” he explains. This rhythm adjusts melatonin production based on light exposure.
The second system, sleep-wake homeostasis, monitors the body’s sleep needs and is influenced by adenosine, which accumulates during wakefulness and decreases during sleep. Caffeine increases alertness by blocking adenosine receptors.
Stress and emotions can significantly affect sleep. Increased stress may heighten cortisol production, disrupting normal sleep patterns.
Impact of Feeling Unsafe
Aslam highlights two stress-related causes of disrupted sleep. The first involves unresolved past experiences. Memories of painful events or feelings of inadequacy can leave the brain feeling insecure.
The second issue is anxiety about the future. The brain may dwell on anticipated negative outcomes, upcoming responsibilities, or an overwhelming workload. In both scenarios, the brain finds it challenging to relax.
“When the brain feels ‘unsafe,’ it enters the sympathetic nervous response, known as the fight or flight response,” Aslam says. This state increases heart rate and brain activity, making sleep more difficult.
To promote sleep, the brain must transition away from stress and overthinking. Shifting from beta waves, linked to stress, to alpha waves, associated with relaxation, is necessary.
People failing to reach this state often use phones late into the night. Aslam notes that they spend hours on devices, attempting to tire themselves out until they sleep from fatigue.
Enhancing Sleep Through Gratitude
Aslam suggests a nightly gratitude exercise to tackle these stressors. This involves listing three things you’re grateful for from today or your past, three things for tomorrow, and four current self-appreciations.
“We are training the brain to feel secure about past, future, and present,” he states. “Completing this before sleep helps as the brain processes thoughts for hours after sleep begins.”
This practice shifts the focus from worries to feelings of security and gratitude, enhancing sleep quality.
Aslam advises writing the gratitude list by hand, using capitals, and not on digital devices. “The brain perceives paper and ink differently.” In the morning, he recommends reviewing the list within 45 minutes, avoiding emails or messages that may trigger stress. Delaying caffeine can also prevent stress-induced cortisol spikes.
Improved sleep can enhance overall mental health, leading to better focus, clarity, and memory.
