The Link Between Feeling Older and Sleep Quality

2 days ago 0

Feeling older than your actual age might indicate that you lack quality sleep. Recent research led by the National Sleep Foundation, published in the journal Sleep, suggests this connection. In the study, over 3,100 adults were asked to identify how old they felt.

Study Findings

The researchers compared participants’ self-perceived age with their sleep quality and daily functioning measures. Adults who felt older often reported insomnia, erratic sleep patterns, and fatigue during the day. These individuals also generally experienced poorer physical health.

Expert Insights

Jonathan Alpert, a New York-based psychotherapist, noted that the study’s findings align with observations from his practice. He mentioned that many of his clients who feel older are typically exhausted, mentally sluggish, and less motivated, which correlates with inadequate sleep.

“Poor sleep is often a major part of the picture,” Alpert remarked.

Experts note that insufficient sleep can make daily tasks feel overwhelming and impair concentration and stress management. These issues can lead to a sensation of premature aging.

Addressing Sleep Deprivation

Alpert advises that before attributing fatigue and low energy solely to aging, people should review their sleep habits. Chronic sleep deprivation could be the real cause.

The study highlighted that those who felt older consistently had worse sleep experiences than those who felt younger or closer to their actual age. Alpert emphasized that fatigue isn’t necessarily a sign of aging.

Study Considerations

While the study offers notable findings, it does have limitations. It relied on self-reported survey data, where participants disclosed their perceived age and sleep habits. The observational nature of the study means that it doesn’t establish whether poor sleep causes individuals to feel older or if it’s the reverse.
