Anant Ganpat Chougule, a young sculptor from Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, has seen an unexpected rise in demand for his figurines. It all began with a video he released online depicting a statue of the Maratha king, Shivaji.
During the Covid lockdown, Chougule crafted a Shivaji figurine from clay as a way to pass time. This small venture unexpectedly propelled his career. After posting the video on YouTube, his detailed statuettes, some of which measure just six inches, attracted buyers’ attention. The surge coincided with a renewed interest in Shivaji, championed by Hindu right-wing groups.
“There’s a lot of demand,” Chougule stated from his studio, where he proudly showcases his work. Although most sales occur online, he remains delighted with the increased interest. Shivaji’s popularity has soared, fueled by organizations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. These groups have strived to highlight Shivaji as a pivotal historical figure.
Chougule, like many supporters, respects the Maratha king for resisting the Mughal forces. However, he emphasized a peaceful coexistence within his community. “Right now, the situation is, they are one,” he added, referring to the harmony between Hindus and Muslims in his hometown.
