President Donald Trump recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the Norwegian Nobel Committee for not awarding him the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. In a Truth Social post, Trump listed several accomplishments he believed qualified him for the honor. He mentioned settling eight wars, negotiating the return of hostages, winning a conflict in Venezuela, and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump has shown interest in the Nobel Prize since 2018 when Norwegian lawmakers nominated him for efforts with North Korea. He has often stated his belief that he deserves the prize. In 2019, Trump told reporters he expected to receive it for many achievements, although he felt the process was unfair.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated Trump in 2025. Despite being an ongoing nominee, this year Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also supported his nomination. However, the award went to South African jurist Navi Pillay.
Pillay is notable for her work being the first non-White woman on South Africa’s high court. She served on international courts dealing with Rwanda and the ICC. From 2008 to 2014, she was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. While recognized for chairing a U.N. inquiry on Israel and Palestine, her work met criticism for perceived anti-Israel bias.
Anne Bayefsky of Human Rights Voices accused Pillay of spreading antisemitism. Nevertheless, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised Pillay’s dedication to justice and human rights, calling her a champion of international law amid historic legal cases.
