Tillis Comments on Trump’s Pressure Over AG Nomination

Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina addressed the ongoing issue with President Donald Trump’s threat to withdraw Todd Blanche’s nomination as acting Attorney General. Tillis emphasized that while it is Trump’s decision to make, the White House must adhere to previous commitments to secure his support.

Tillis’s response followed Trump’s criticisms of both Tillis and Senator John Cornyn from Texas, accusing them of obstructing his efforts to appoint Blanche. Trump has even suggested delaying the nomination until both senators are out of office. Tillis plans to retire, and Cornyn lost his primary bid for re-election.

Tillis and the Nomination Stalemate

Tillis explained that Trump’s approach cannot resolve the standoff unless the administration fulfills its commitment. Tillis demands that the nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund be abolished permanently and Trump’s audit immunity language in a settlement agreement be revised before he supports Blanche.

Tillis stated, “The best step forward is confirming Blanche and resolving this agreement.” He insisted on the importance of these terms being met for his confirmation vote.

Assessment of Blanche and the Administration

Tillis noted that the issue does not lie with Blanche himself, as he found Blanche to be forthright during his confirmation process. Instead, he placed the blame on a member of Trump’s advisory team.

“Blanche is clear of blame in this situation,” Tillis stated. “Identifying and confronting the advisor responsible within the president’s team is necessary.”

Additionally, Tillis expressed skepticism about the Senate’s future receptiveness to Blanche’s nomination. He highlighted that Republicans face a precarious position with more seats in jeopardy compared to Democrats.

Possibility of Blanche Continuing as Acting AG

Even if President Trump withdraws Blanche’s nomination, Blanche could remain in the role under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, which permits acting officials to hold their position for up to 210 days. Withdrawal would restart this timeframe, potentially allowing Blanche to serve until late February.

Negotiations are still underway, and Tillis clarified that he has not ruled out supporting Blanche’s confirmation. He stated, “Negotiations persist in a political atmosphere where situations are rarely as they seem.”
