Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ Struggles at the Box Office

39 minutes ago 0

Hollywood icon Tom Cruise, known for his box office successes, experienced a rare setback with the release of the dark comedy Digger. The film had one of the worst debuts of his career. Despite Cruise’s reputation for blockbuster openings, Digger performed poorly, earning only $8 million domestically and $12 million internationally. This is a stark contrast to the estimated production cost of $125 to $150 million, and marketing expenses of $100 million.

Cruise previously received praise for delaying the release of Top Gun: Maverick during the pandemic to ensure a theatrical-only launch, a strategy that resulted in worldwide earnings of $1.5 billion. This latest setback with Digger marks a departure from his usual box office dominance.

Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, was a disappointment for Warner Bros. as its last standalone project. The film’s performance did not meet expectations, especially considering Cruise’s significant international draw.

Trade analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted, “Despite Digger‘s performance, it doesn’t diminish Cruise’s value to studios.” He emphasized that Cruz still remains a high-value actor for studios. Lessons might be learned from this experience regarding budgeting and positioning, but Cruise’s longstanding success keeps studios eager to collaborate with him.

In the same weekend, the top box office position was claimed by Amazon MGM’s Verity, an erotic psychological thriller, which earned $32.6 million. Directed by Michael Showalter and starring a prominent cast including Anne Hathaway, the film is part of a successful series of adaptations of author Colleen Hoover’s works.

Other notable performers included Sony Pictures with Resident Evil bringing in $12.5 million, and Heart of the Beast from Paramount, starring Brad Pitt, grossing $11 million.

Tom Cruise took significant promotional measures for Digger, including a rare interview with GQ magazine. However, the film only received a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The London premiere attracted significant attention, attended by the British royals and notable figures like David Beckham.

Dergarabedian asserted, “The reception of Digger doesn’t alter Cruise’s status in Hollywood. The film wasn’t a typical Cruise blockbuster and didn’t aim to be.” Despite the outcome, Cruise continues to be a sought-after figure for major film projects.
