Tommy John Bids Farewell During Yankees Old-Timers’ Day

Tommy John, the former New York Yankees pitcher renowned for the elbow surgery enhancing countless sports careers, addressed his fans during the Old-Timers’ Day event. At 83, John expressed his gratitude and shared personal insights as he faces health struggles in Florida.

During the celebration, John extended thanks to the Yankees organization, the Steinbrenner family, friends, and fans for their support throughout his 26-year career. He also highlighted the life-changing impact of Dr. Frank Jobe, whose surgical procedure allowed him to continue pitching and inspired hope for many athletes thereafter.

“Thanks to Dr. Jobe, who saved my arm & made it possible for me to continue pitching. That surgery has since gone on to save the careers of countless pitchers, including many of the very best in the game today,” he stated.

John’s career is marked by resilience and success. Post-surgery in 1974, he achieved over 160 victories, missing only the 1975 season. He became a four-time All-Star and dedicated eight seasons to the Yankees, alongside tenures with several other teams, including the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. His career stats include a 3.34 ERA and 2,245 strikeouts.

Reflecting on personal advice from his father, John shared, The day I left for my first job as a pitcher, my father looked at me & said, ‘Good luck, Tommy. Just remember one thing: whether you make it big in the big leagues or you don’t, you’ll always just be Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana.’ He emphasized the lasting significance of these words.

John’s farewell resonates as an emotional milestone in a storied career, leaving fans and teammates with cherished memories.
