Tornado Confirmed in Hickory Hills and Surrounding Areas
Residents of Hickory Hills and Bridgeview witnessed severe damage after a tornado struck. The storm tore through their community, leaving destruction in its path. National Weather Service confirmed the tornado’s presence, recording winds between 111 and 135 mph.
The tornado marked its course from Hickory Hills to Midway Airport, part of a series of 17 tornadoes that hit the region Thursday night. Melissa Alvarez, a resident of the affected apartment building, noted power was restored late Sunday.
The building’s roof was blown off during the storm, leaving Alvarez uncertain if safety inspections were conducted. Hickory Hills Mayor Mike Howley, initially unaware of the extent of the damage, later received images showing downed poles and unsafe live wires.
Impact of the Storm and Recovery Efforts
Reports from Mayor Howley indicate no fatalities but significant structural damage. Power outages affected much of the town alongside a water main break. Mayor Howley recalls the unsettling feeling of windows being pulled inward as the storm hit.
An estimated 12% of the town was without power by Monday afternoon. Cleanup efforts led by Police and Public Works departments are ongoing. Mayor Howley cautions residents against scammers offering fraudulent tree services.
The National Weather Service announced that further analysis of the tornado’s impact would be performed, although preliminary assessments are available on their website.
Calumet City’s Storm Damage
Calumet City similarly faced extensive storm damage. Mayor Thaddeus Jones reported unprecedented devastation, including the uprooting of century-old trees which damaged homes and vehicles.
The storm led to widespread power outages in the city. Recovery teams were mobilized, comprising 56 personnel from Police and Fire departments along with tree service staff.
One incident resulted in a woman’s hospitalization due to a fallen tree impacting her house. The house is slated for demolition due to structural damage. Support is being organized for affected residents through Red Cross and donations.
Efforts include wellness checks on locals by police officers and ongoing communication via calls and emails for assistance. Residents are advised to exercise caution around damaged areas.
