Tragic Ferry Incident in Vanuatu: Search for Missing Passengers Continues

An urgent search is unfolding in the South Pacific after a passenger ferry sank between two islands in Vanuatu, east of Australia. The tragedy involves the MV Matui, which was traveling between Ambae and Santo islands when it sank on Friday, carrying 47 people onboard.

Efforts by search-and-rescue teams led to the rescue of 15 survivors and recovery of one body. However, over 30 individuals remain missing as authorities focus their search along Vanuatu’s southeastern coastline. Currents may have transported survivors there, according to Matai Seremaiah, a Parliament member for Luganville, via a statement on Facebook by Vanuatu’s Ministry of the Prime Minister.

‘Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones,’ expressed the ministry. ‘To the survivors, we pray for your strength and recovery. To the families of those missing and those we have lost, please know that the nation stands with you in this time of grief.’

Retired Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport, based in Virginia, highlighted survival factors for the missing passengers, such as water temperature, possible injuries, and the availability of lifesaving equipment. He acknowledged that as time passes without food or water, the risk of hypothermia increases, diminishing survival chances.

The ministry suspects that the sinking may have resulted from neglected marine warnings and a potentially overloaded vessel. It emphasized the necessity of prioritizing safety at sea, warning that disregarding strong marine advisories endangers lives.

‘Ship owners must ensure their vessels are seaworthy, carry all required safety equipment, and have proper communication systems onboard,’ the ministry stated.

A full investigation is underway to ascertain facts and prevent future tragedies. This incident echoes another ferry disaster on August 30, when the Filo Jet catamaran capsized off northern Cyprus, leading to 14 fatalities and 14 missing. Rescuers brought 239 passengers ashore.
