Two custodians were found dead from gunshot wounds at Mark Twain Elementary School in Chicago on Monday. Police reported that a 48-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man were found unresponsive at around 3:30 p.m. Both victims had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and were pronounced dead at local hospitals.
The Chicago Police Department indicated the incident appeared to be a murder-suicide, with the male custodian allegedly killing his female co-worker before turning the gun on himself. The Chicago Sun-Times, citing a police report, mentioned that the male custodian was anxious about an impending transfer from the school.
Principal Matthew Moline informed parents through a letter, explaining that the shootings happened when no students were in the building. He expressed sorrow over the loss, stating that members of the school community were deeply impacted by the incident.
SEIU Local 73, the union representing custodial employees at Chicago Public Schools, confirmed that the victims were staff members at the school. Trumaine Reeves, SEIU Local 73 Executive Vice President, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the entire school community.
The tragedy has raised concerns among families and staff, and additional updates are expected as the investigation continues. Authorities discovered an unspecified weapon at the scene.
