Janice Nix Sentenced for Stepmother’s Manslaughter

A woman from South London has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the death of her 5-year-old stepdaughter. The conviction of Janice Nix, 67, occurred in May when she was found guilty of manslaughter. The incident dates back to 1978 when Nix was said to have forced young Andrea Bernard into a scalding bath, resulting in her death.

The key testimony that led to Nix’s conviction came from Desmond Bernard, Andrea’s brother. Desmond, who was 8 at the time of his sister’s death, revealed the truth after nearly 50 years of keeping it secret. He recalled the tragic events and admitted to initially lying about Andrea’s death.

The case had long been considered an accident, with a coroner’s report suggesting death from sepsis due to extensive burns. However, prosecutors argued that Andrea’s death resulted from Nix’s abusive behavior. This included forcing Andrea into a hot bath as a punishment, as well as a history of beating the children with belts and burning them with cigarettes.

According to Desmond’s account, on June 6, 1978, Andrea was asked to skip school to help clean their Thornton Heath home under Nix’s orders. Andrea fled the house, fearing further corporal punishment, which highlighted the abusive environment she faced.
