The narrative of artificial intelligence in healthcare often describes a future where machines outperform human professionals. A scan-reading algorithm surpasses radiologists, and chatbots handle patient inquiries better than nurses. This neat storyline, however, misses essential truths. Through years of experience at the National University Hospital, Singapore, my perspective has shifted. The key question isn’t what an algorithm can do but how it empowers people to achieve new capabilities.
Empowering Through Education
Technology itself is straightforward. Yet, the challenging, transformative conversation centers on leadership. How do we foster a workforce that collaborates with AI rather than views it as an authority? The goal is to educate ten percent of every job group in AI literacy. This means not only doctors or IT professionals but also individuals like cleaners and finance officers. Achieving ten percent creates cultural change. Below that, innovation appears distant. Above it, innovation becomes a collective skill.
Innovation Infrastructure
To support this vision, we founded the Kent Ridge Office of Innovation (KROI). KROI operates through three pillars:
ASCEND: Prioritizes skill development for continuous learning in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
NEXUS: Focuses on collaboration and optimizing processes because most AI failures in healthcare stem from workflow, not technology.
FORGE: Handles the practical work of turning prototypes into viable tools for real-world use.
Currently, 41 percent of our 10,700 staff have trained in integrating AI with clinical and operational improvements. Additionally, our Innovation Hub provides a physical space for staff to test ideas, access technology, and collaborate across disciplines. This tangible aspect is crucial to making innovation accessible. It fosters environments where diverse professionals can share insights and develop solutions.
Human-Centric AI Leadership
Our approach aligns with the mission command philosophy: clear intent and decentralized execution. Small, central teams cannot address every AI use case in a large organization. Frontline teams can, provided they have the necessary support and tools.
This strategy leads to a digital workforce that collaborates with AI agents handling routine tasks. These tools save professionals’ time, allowing deeper focus on patient care. The misconception is that AI reduces the need for human leadership. In contrast, more human insight is essential. Algorithms cannot prioritize values or communicate complex decisions. Each AI application concludes with a human judgment, requiring training and trust in decision-makers.
The successful institutions are not defined by AI budgets but by empowering their people to co-develop technology. Leadership today requires understanding AI’s capabilities and constraints. It’s about engaging with recommendations and knowing when to challenge or escalate them.
