The U.S. State Department has raised the Travel Advisory for Ceuta to Level 3: Reconsider Travel, following a massive influx of migrants from Morocco. The advisory highlights potential security risks due to the sudden and largely unchecked arrival of individuals into the Spanish enclave.
The advisory specifically pertains to Ceuta, an autonomous city on the African coastline, sharing its border with Morocco.
Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas reported that approximately 60,000 migrants entered the territory within 24 hours. Spain’s Interior Ministry adjusted this count to about 50,000. Many have since returned to Morocco.
In response, Spain has strengthened its security measures, deploying its military along with the National Police and Guardia Civil. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced further steps to address the situation, including increasing security personnel in Ceuta and implementing a sea barrier to aid in repatriations.
The surge is linked to a recent Spanish Supreme Court decision regarding sea arrivals, which human trafficking networks misinterpreted, leading to the escalation.
Former President Donald Trump commented on the situation, during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, likening it to an ‘invasion’ and cautioning against similar events potentially occurring in the United States.
The Spanish enclaves, Ceuta and Melilla, represent key corridors for irregular migration to Europe, given their positions as part of both Spain and the EU while geographically located on the African continent.
