Von Detten’s Legal Troubles
Former Disney star Erik von Detten is facing a lawsuit from an elderly couple in California. Sheila, 85, and Norman Greenberg, 97, claim they invested over $2.1 million of their retirement savings in gold coins at von Detten’s urging. The coins were allegedly overpriced.
Investment Details
Filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on May 11, the lawsuit details accusations of financial elder abuse, fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty against von Detten and Rosland Capital. The complaint points to aggressive sales tactics aimed at seniors. The Greenbergs say they contacted Rosland in 2020 after seeing TV ads promoting gold as a safe investment.
Trust and Betrayal
The couple believed von Detten, one of Rosland’s top advisors, was trustworthy. On October 19, 2020, they purchased over $999,000 in Lady Liberty gold coins. Sheila spent $599,654.83 on 797 coins, while Norman bought 531 coins for $399,519.09. The lawsuit indicates a 60% markup, with each ounce of gold priced at $3,009.56 despite a spot price of $1,903.
The Greenbergs claim an immediate loss of over $367,000.
After continual pressure, they made another purchase on November 5, 2020, totaling more than $1.14 million. The lawsuit states this transaction led to an additional loss exceeding $418,000.
Further Exploitation
The Greenbergs allege their traditional IRA accounts were depleted as funds were rolled over into these investments. The coins were sent to Delaware Depository for storage, incurring fees. In August 2021, they allegedly used their family trust to buy $200,000 more in coins, reportedly worth much less.
It was only in 2025 that the couple realized the overcharges. With AI assistance, they discovered alleged unethical practices by Rosland.
Legal Claims and Reactions
The lawsuit argues for compensatory damages of at least $900,000, along with double damages, punitive damages, and other costs. The couple is also demanding a jury trial.
Von Detten has not publicly commented. Fox News Digital’s attempts to contact him for comment have been unsuccessful.
