Trump Announces End of U.S. Troops in Iraq

Trump’s Announcement

President Donald Trump has stated that the United States no longer requires a military presence in Iraq. This decision comes as the coalition mission nears its planned conclusion at the end of September.

According to Trump, Iran’s weakening allows Baghdad to operate independently. He emphasized a shift in relations, from military collaboration to investment and energy development.

Iraqi Prime Minister’s Perspective

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi shares this view, asserting that factions outside state control will have no justification post-mission. He confirms Iraq’s security forces can protect the nation independently.

Al-Zaidi emphasizes that weapon control is a fixed state policy.

Transition to Economic Partnership

After two decades since the U.S. invasion, plans now focus on economic engagement rather than military efforts. This transition is supported by billions in U.S. energy investments in Iraq.

Historically, Iran has influenced Iraq through political parties and militias. The U.S. has encouraged Baghdad to integrate these groups into the state’s framework.

Reduction of U.S. Forces

Under a 2024 pact, the U.S. agreed to reduce military engagement in Iraq starting in September 2025. This drawdown is in response to the evolving security landscape as the fight against ISIS continues.

From 170,000 troops during 2007, numbers reduced to about 2,500 prior to the drawdown in 2025, highlighting the shift from combat to advisory roles.

Background on Leadership

Ali al-Zaidi, a newcomer in politics, assumed office this year after political stalemates. Trump supported al-Zaidi’s candidacy, opposing Nouri al-Maliki due to perceived Iranian ties.

In an Oval Office meeting, Trump praised al-Zaidi as a pivotal leader across the Middle East. He acknowledged his involvement in al-Zaidi’s electoral success.
