Trump Appeals Ruling Against IRS Lawsuit

President Donald Trump initiated an appeal against a federal judge’s decision questioning the legality of a lawsuit he filed alongside his two sons and the Trump Organization against the IRS. This legal action follows the July 13 ruling by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, who criticized the $10 billion lawsuit as serving an ‘improper purpose.’

The lawsuit resulted in the Justice Department establishing a $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund as a settlement component. This agreement assured no government investigation or financial demands on Trump’s tax claims involving him, his family, or his companies. The IRS has not commented on the impending appeal.

Trump’s legal team asserted that the IRS allowed a politically-driven employee to leak confidential information about Trump and the Trump Organization, which subsequently reached millions. In 2023, a former IRS contractor pleaded guilty to stealing and leaking Trump’s tax records from 2019 and 2020. He is now serving a five-year sentence.

Trump had sued the IRS and the Treasury Department in January, accusing them of unauthorized disclosure of his tax documents. This leak led to a New York Times report, revealing Trump paid only $750 in federal taxes for 2016 and 2017.

Judge Williams, appointed by Barack Obama, ruled that Trump used the lawsuit to ‘manipulate the judicial process’ rather than defend his rights. She highlighted Trump’s control over the Justice Department, Treasury Department, and IRS. Williams also stated the Justice Department could not present the settlement with Trump as a judicial agreement.

The ruling included sanctions against acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward. The Florida Bar Association was also asked to consider disciplinary actions for Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito.

This settlement remains central in the conflict between Republican senators and the Justice Department, affecting the nomination proceedings for Blanche’s role as attorney general. Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis have called for the DOJ to permanently discontinue the ‘anti-weaponization’ fund and restrict the audit protection deal before proceeding with Blanche’s nomination.

Trump acknowledged the fund’s termination but expressed his discontent with the situation. When asked about limiting the tax deal’s terms for himself and his entities, he chose not to respond.
