President Donald Trump congratulated Abelardo de la Espriella on his lead in Colombia’s presidential election. De la Espriella is a Conservative attorney with a reputation as an anti-cartel hardliner.
With nearly all votes counted, he holds a narrow lead over Ivan Cepeda, securing 49.7% to Cepeda’s 48.7%. De la Espriella performed well in the mountainous interior and Antioquia, while Cepeda found support in Bogotá and coastal regions.
Cepeda has contested the results, citing irregularities, though overturning such results would be unprecedented in Colombia. If de la Espriella secures the presidency, it might reflect a regional shift towards conservatism.
De la Espriella’s platform includes a strong law-and-order stance, resembling former President Alvaro Uribe’s approach. He pledges aggressive military actions against guerrilla and criminal groups. Comparatively, Cepeda supports negotiation strategies akin to Gustavo Petro’s policies.
De la Espriella also advocates for free-market economics, lower taxes, and promises to enhance the U.S.-Colombia relationship, which faced strains during Petro’s era. His international stance suggests aligning closely with Trump’s policies, including demands for actions against guerrilla groups in Venezuela.
