President Donald Trump intensified his dispute with Canada by proposing to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America.’ He accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of fabricating claims regarding US intentions on French-language protections.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to [sic] doing much business with Ontario any longer.”
Trump further criticized Carney, dismissing allegations that the US sought concessions related to French language in recent trade talks. He stated, “I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing.”
He accused Carney of inventing the lie to regain political support in Quebec, adding, “I love French Canadians!”
The tensions emerged from stalled trade negotiations and new tariffs and threats exchanged between Washington and Ottawa. Carney insisted on preserving French language and culture, which he said were “never on the table” for Canada.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer countered Carney’s claims, stating the French language issue was a “funny, fake story” and highlighted concerns over the requirements affecting American streaming companies.
Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, is crucial in the US-Canadian auto industry. Lake Ontario spans Ontario and New York, making Trump’s name proposal another provocative act amid the economic standoff.
Trump’s strategy included previously renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. Vice President JD Vance defended the administration’s stance, criticizing Canada for favoring Chinese goods over American products.
Vance expressed discontent with Canadian demands during negotiations, blaming them for unreasonable last-minute conditions. Trump announced a 50% tariff on Canadian automotive and steel products, set for 2027, arguing Canada mistreated US producers.
Despite the rhetoric, Vance suggested that negotiations with Ottawa might resume, advocating for a fair trade agreement.
