Trump’s Approval Among White Voters Sees a Shift

Recent Poll Results

President Donald Trump’s support from white voters has improved, according to a recent poll by Marquette Law School. Conducted from July 22 to 27 with 639 white respondents, the poll shows 51% approval of Trump’s performance as president, with 49% disapproving. This results in a net approval rating of +2.

This marks a significant change from the poll in June, which indicated a -12 net approval rating. Conducted between June 9 and 15 among 903 white respondents, that poll showed only 44% approval, with 56% disapproving of Trump’s job performance.

Importance of White Voter Support

White voters form a substantial portion of the U.S. electorate. They have been key to Trump’s political success for over a decade. A decline in support could pose challenges for Republicans in the forthcoming midterm elections.

The president’s party typically loses seats in midterm elections. With the control of Congress in question, even minor changes in voter support could have significant ramifications. If white voters shift their votes to Democrats or abstain from voting due to dissatisfaction with Trump, Republicans may struggle to maintain control of the House and Senate.

Other Polls Indicate a Decline

A CNN poll released in July reported Trump’s net approval among white voters at -20, the lowest during his presidency. Conducted by SSRS from July 23 to 27 with 1,225 U.S. adults, this poll showed a decline in support over the past year.

His net approval rating fluctuated from even in July 2025, to -12 by March, and finally to -20 in July. The poll also highlighted a drop in support among Republicans, with only 78% approving, the lowest during his term.

Economist/YouGov polls also reflect a steady decline in Trump’s support among white voters, particularly those without a college degree, a group historically supportive of him. Their last survey between July 25 and 27 found a net approval of -14 among white voters and -6 among those without a college degree, down from +27 in February of the previous year.

Considerations and Expert Opinions

Costas Panagopoulos, a Northeastern University political science professor, advises caution regarding the Marquette poll results. “Most polls show Trump’s approval falling among white voters, driven by economic anxiety and concerns over Iran and trade,” he told Newsweek.

“This could be an anomalous result due to methodological differences.” Variations in polling can arise from sampling, weighting, question wording, and respondent makeup.

Statement from the White House

The White House often dismisses the president’s low approval ratings, citing Trump’s 2024 election win as proof of public support. In response to inquiries, White House spokesman Davis Ingle reiterated Trump’s mandate from voters to advance his agenda. In a statement to Newsweek, Ingle stated, “President Trump is achieving historic progress for Americans, and his agenda is gaining momentum.”

White voters have been essential to Trump’s support since his 2016 election victory. They often rate him higher than other demographic groups. However, with Trump’s overall approval hitting record lows, improving or worsening ratings among white voters could significantly influence the upcoming midterms.
