President Donald Trump has announced a new initiative aimed at exploring oil, gas, and mineral deposits in Greenland, referring to the island as “our new and beautiful Greenland.” This announcement builds on a recent security agreement designed to amplify the American military and security presence on the island.
The agreement, which was concluded in September, involved the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark. It grants the United States access to Greenland’s airspace and territory. However, Greenland continues to operate as an autonomous entity within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Before this agreement, negotiations were strained, with Trump threatening to acquire control over Greenland, potentially by force. Despite these tensions, the agreement was achieved, emphasizing cooperation between the involved parties.
On Truth Social, Trump expressed his views on the strategic importance of Greenland. “Experts suggest that the amount of readily available oil on the island is unparalleled, surpassing that of most other lands globally. From a security perspective, Greenland is crucial for defending the United States and Europe,” he declared.
Trump also highlighted the defensive capabilities offered by the island’s strategic location. He stated, “Any potential attack on the United States would face defenses established in Greenland, capable of intercepting drones, missiles, or even unforeseen weapons. This location provides unparalleled advantages in terms of time, sightline, and security.”
