U.S.-Mediated Talks Aim to End Conflict Between Israel and Hezbollah

3 weeks ago 0

Israeli and Lebanese officials convened for a fresh round of U.S.-mediated discussions on Tuesday. The goal is to strengthen a fragile cease-fire and facilitate Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon. However, many doubt a significant breakthrough will occur.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, a group supported by Iran, has led to significant losses. Thousands have died, and over a million people have been displaced. The fighting began soon after the U.S. and Israel engaged in war with Iran. Hezbollah attacked Israel to support Tehran.

The talks are taking place over two days at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. These discussions follow a preliminary agreement made last month that aims to end the violence in Lebanon. The agreement, signed on June 26, has met criticism in Lebanon. It does not specify when Israel must withdraw.

The agreement requires Israel’s exit to be linked to Hezbollah’s disarmament. The Lebanese government is responsible for leading this disarmament, but progress has been slow. It stipulates that as Israel leaves, the Lebanese Armed Forces will assume control of these areas. This will allow displaced residents to return home.

Talks occur amidst uncertainty in the broader region. The U.S.-Iran framework cease-fire agreement, signed last month, aimed at ending warfare across all fronts, including Lebanon. Recently, both Iran and President Trump declared the agreement void. As tensions rise, Hezbollah’s next steps remain unclear.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed his hopes on Monday that the talks would result in ‘concrete and practical steps on the ground.’ He urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize that violence will not ensure long-term safety.
