Two U.S. Navy aviators ejected while trying to land their aircraft on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower off the coast of Virginia on Monday evening. Described by the Navy as a “mishap,” the incident also injured four sailors aboard the aircraft carrier. One sailor received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital in the Norfolk area.
The aviators, who are part of Carrier Air Wing 3, were successfully recovered by search and rescue personnel and are under medical evaluation. The type of aircraft involved in the accident has not been disclosed by the Navy, nor have specific details on what led to the mishap.
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class carrier commissioned in 1977. This incident mirrors other recent occurrences where military aviators had to eject. In May, a similar situation occurred when four Navy crew members safely ejected after two EA-18G Growlers collided during an aerial demonstration in Idaho.
