Deion Sanders, renowned Pro Football Hall of Famer and coach of the University of Colorado football team, has overcome substantial health challenges in recent years. Known for his unique achievement of playing in both a Super Bowl and a World Series, Sanders faced more daunting adversaries off the field than any he encountered in his sports career.
In a recent national interview, Sanders announced jubilantly, “I got my life back. I got my swagger back.” This follows his revelation on “Good Morning America” that he is now free of cancer. His battle with serious blood clots, which previously led to the amputation of several toes and necessitated an aspiration thrombectomy procedure in his left leg, has been arduous.
“I’m cancer free. I’m good,”
Sanders acknowledged the role of the exceptional medical team in Colorado and his faith during his journey to recovery. Early detection played a crucial part, as regular checks for other health issues inadvertently led to the cancer discovery.
The road to recovery involved multiple medical interventions. Blood clots had compelled Sanders to undergo surgery in 2023 to improve circulation. However, recurring leg pain indicated the return of these clots, prompting another procedure. The situation intensified with a bladder cancer diagnosis in 2025 during a routine vascular exam.
Treatment involved the removal of Sanders’ bladder and rebuilding a new one using a segment of his intestine. This procedure led to challenges, including the initial difficulty in controlling his bladder.
“Now you’re sitting in the room, don’t know what’s what, can’t control your bladder,” Sanders reflected. “You got a whole new bladder. Your bladder don’t know you, you don’t know it. You’re peeing in the bed.” He faced these difficulties during public engagements and travels.
Sanders turned an embarrassing situation into an opportunity by becoming a spokesperson for Depend, a company providing adult incontinence products. This partnership has alleviated his travel concerns and sleep disturbances.
Prepared for the upcoming season, Sanders is eager to return to what he knows best: football. His focus is on leading the Colorado Buffaloes with renewed energy and health. “Winning,” Sanders stated when asked about his future focus. “And I’m healthy. I got my health back. I got my swagger back … I got my me back.” He expressed immense relief and contentment, contrasting his current state with his past struggles.
