UFT Goes Against Mayor Mamdani’s Lawsuit Over Pay Raises

The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the largest teachers union in New York City, faces off against Mayor Zohran Mamdani. They oppose his move to block a city-supported pay increase for education paraprofessionals, although they endorsed him last year.

Last month, the New York City Council passed the “RESPECT Check Act” with unanimous agreement. This act would provide up to a $10,000 bonus to paraprofessionals in education. Mayor Mamdani, who previously backed a similar bill, now contends that it contravenes the state’s Taylor Law. This law ensures public employees can negotiate pay and other conditions. Consequently, his administration filed a lawsuit to halt the law from taking effect on August 19.

Mayor Mamdani’s Legal Action

In retaliation, the UFT filed a motion last week in preparation for a court battle should the Mayor persist. “We were ready,” UFT President Michael Mulgrew told Fox News Digital. He stated that the “RESPECT check law,” which the City Council passed on July 16, was crafted to comply with the Taylor Law. Mulgrew made clear that both the City Council and UFT wouldn’t have backed an unlawful bill.

“This is a moment for Mayor Mamdani to foster a fair system,” Mulgrew added. “His administration must fulfill its promises, and we will persevere until it does.”

Fox News reached out but didn’t get an immediate response from Mamdani’s office.

City Council’s Stance

The city council’s position was clear. City Council Speaker Julie Menin and council member Carmen De La Rosa issued a statement supporting the law and criticizing Mamdani’s actions. They highlighted the low pay of paraprofessionals, with some earning $32,000 annually. The act, beyond being proper, aims to manage staffing shortages that cost the city $1.5 billion in Carter case expenses.

The UFT’s endorsement for Mamdani followed his Democratic candidacy win for mayor in July 2025.

Ongoing Discussions

Despite the ongoing lawsuit, Mamdani noted progress in discussions with Menin and the UFT. At a recent news conference, he expressed support for paraprofessional pay increases. Mayor Mamdani emphasized the productive nature of talks, noting the shared view of paraprofessionals’ importance to the city’s school system.
