2 days ago 0

Cape Verde’s midfielder, Kevin Pina, celebrated as he scored his team’s first goal during a World Cup match against Uruguay in Miami Gardens, Florida on Sunday. Cape Verde managed a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. This match, part of their remarkable journey in their first World Cup, follows a 0-0 draw against Spain in their inaugural Group H match. With a population just over half a million, Cape Verde now stands a strong chance of progressing to the knockout round.

Curaçao also marks its debut performance at the World Cup. With only 158,000 residents, it is the smallest nation to compete in the tournament. Curaçao secured a historic first point with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador, thanks to Eloy Room’s impressive 15 saves.

Scotland, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, opened with a 1-0 victory over Haiti but narrowly lost 1-0 to Morocco. The Scots face Brazil next in Group C. Despite a potential defeat, they might still make the knockout stage.

The United States comfortably advanced to the knockout round, after defeating Australia 2-0, and winning Group D. They previously beat Paraguay, who surprisingly overcame Turkey. Upcoming for the U.S. is a less critical match against Turkey on Thursday. Coach Mauricio Pochettino may rest key players like Christian Pulisic, who is recovering from a calf injury, and others carrying yellow cards.

Defending champion Argentina heads into its second match against Austria, buoyed by Lionel Messi’s hat trick securing a 3-0 win over Algeria. Argentina’s advancement seems assured, unlike Portugal facing uncertainties. Cristiano Ronaldo had a disappointing performance in Portugal’s 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo and faces a crucial game against Uzbekistan.

Additional group stage highlights include France vs. Iraq on Monday, England vs. Ghana on Tuesday, and Switzerland vs. Canada on Wednesday. Group F heats up Thursday with Tunisia facing the Netherlands and Sweden versus Japan. The group stage concludes on Saturday, with the knockout round starting Sunday, June 28, as the competition intensifies with the Round of 32.
