University of Washington Cancels Hasan Piker Lecture Due to Planning Flaws

The University of Washington has canceled a planned lecture featuring progressive Twitch commentator Hasan Piker. This decision was attributed to issues in the event’s planning process.

Piker, a well-known streamer and YouTube personality, was set to speak in January as part of the university’s 2026-27 Speaker Series. However, the university’s review of the event’s organization process led to its cancellation.

“It was determined that the process for organizing this event did not meet the necessary level of rigor for University-hosted events in the Speaker Series,” stated the university.

“Going forward, procedures will be updated to ensure the standards we have for University-hosted events like the Speaker Series are met, particularly so that we can help elevate the level of dialogue on divisive topics during a polarized time in our country,” it added.

Piker, known for his controversial remarks, previously faced backlash for saying America “deserved 9/11,” a comment he later said was “inappropriate.” This recent event cancellation has sparked criticism from First Amendment advocates. The nonprofit Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) condemned the move, urging transparency on what standards were unmet.

The organization emphasized that while public universities can set event standards, they should not use those standards to cancel a speaker because of their views.

Andrew Kolvet, executive producer of the Charlie Kirk Show, criticized the decision on social media, noting that similar situations occur with Turning Point USA and are blamed on administrative errors.

Piker, a self-proclaimed socialist, gained attention for his controversial statements, such as advocating punitive measures against Democrats not supporting Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has been vocal against Piker’s rhetoric, suggesting a potential split in the Democratic Party.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Carville discussed future challenges for the Democratic Party, highlighting the need for resolution at the presidential level as Piker’s views gain influence.
