USMNT Secures Strong Opening Victory Over Paraguay

The United States Men’s National Team faced Paraguay in a World Cup group stage match, starting at 9 p.m. ET at Los Angeles Stadium. Coached by Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT currently holds the 17th spot in FIFA’s World Rankings.

In a thrilling start, the U.S. benefited from an own goal by Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla in the sixth minute. This gave the Americans an early 1-0 lead. Fans in the full stadium in Inglewood, California, erupted with excitement.

Folarin Balogun added to the U.S. lead in the 30th minute with another goal. A New York native, Balogun celebrated his first World Cup goal, marking a significant milestone in his career. His goal was the third-fastest the U.S. reached two goals in a World Cup match, previously doing so against Portugal in 2002 and Paraguay in 1930.

Balogun increased the U.S. lead just before halftime, scoring again to make it 3-0. The crowd in Inglewood was elated as Balogun received a precise pass from teammate Malik Tillman, which he converted with a skillful shot into the top-left corner.

The U.S. team entered halftime with a solid 3-0 advantage.

Paraguay’s Mauricio scored in the 73rd minute, narrowing the U.S. lead to 3-1. The Americans are set to play Australia on June 19 in Seattle as they continue their World Cup campaign.
