Utah Women Challenge Political Traditions

When attempts arose from Republicans to overturn a voter-approved law banning gerrymandering in Utah, opposition emerged contrary to the typical imagery of Utah women known as ‘tradwives.’ This unexpected stance captured attention.

Mormon Women for Ethical Government, an organization formed following Donald Trump’s first inauguration, championed peacemaking from the beginning. The group, largely consisting of dedicated Utah Republicans, aligned its mission with church teachings. Their belief emphasized that women nurture communities and engage in meaningful dialogue with those holding differing views.

Despite the peaceful origins, these women now find themselves embroiled in intense political conflicts. Key issues at play include the redrawing of congressional districts and debates over abortion, all linked to broader power dynamics. Central to this conflict is the struggle over which entities hold true power: the courts, the populace, or elected officials.

Utah presents a unique backdrop where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds significant political influence in a patriarchal structure. Amidst this, the voices of Utah’s women are gaining prominence. However, male politicians, including Governor Spencer Cox, known for promoting more agreeable discourse, have responded with punitive measures against these women.

The women involved remain resolute. Emma Petty Addams, co-executive director of the organization, referenced church doctrine on responsible power use, stating, “We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.”

While Utah’s portrayal often shows traditional wives and social media mothers or ‘momfluencers,’ the situation in the state reveals a different narrative—one where women assert their voices and advocate for ethical governmental practices.
