Actor Ben Jones, famed for his role as Cooter Davenport in “The Dukes of Hazzard,” has died at the age of 84. Jones passed away following a heart attack at his Washington, Virginia home as he awaited a baseball game featuring his cherished Atlanta Braves. His wife, Alma Viator, announced the news on social media.

“I lost the love of my life today,” Viator wrote on Facebook, describing Jones’ passing from a “massive heart attack.” Alma reflected on Jones’ fulfilling life, expressing deep love and the sadness of his absence.

Early Life and Career

Born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on August 30, 1941, Jones’ career began in theater. He made his film debut in 1972’s “Together For Days” and appeared in “Moonrunners” in 1975. His television journey started in 1976 with a role in “Movin’ On.” Before landing his iconic role in “The Dukes of Hazzard,” Jones featured in “Nashville 99” and “The Magical World of Disney.”

Role in The Dukes of Hazzard

Jones became part of the beloved 1979-1985 series as the mechanic Cooter Davenport. He reprised the role in later reunions such as “The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!” in 1997 and “Hazzard in Hollywood” in 2000. His final television appearance was in the series “Surface” in 2005, and his last film was “Unbreakable” in 2021.

Political Career

Apart from acting, Jones served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Georgia’s fourth district from 1989 to 1993. His contribution transcended entertainment and politics, marking him as a versatile individual.
