Violent Transit Incidents Raise Safety Concerns in Major U.S. Cities

In Atlanta, a tragic incident unfolded when Margaret Swan, a 66-year-old great-grandmother, was fatally stabbed on a train in what authorities describe as an unprovoked attack. This has led to federal charges against John Elijah Matthews. Affected family members are seeking answers about transit security measures.

Bruce Levell, previously the MARTA operations chairman, expressed concern over security on Atlanta’s transit system. He highlighted issues due to homeless individuals using trains as shelter.

Recent violent incidents on public transportation systems in different cities have reignited commuter fears. The incidents include a shooting at Atlanta’s MARTA, stabbings at New York City’s Penn Station, and a stabbing on Charlotte’s Lynx Blue Line.

1. Atlanta’s MARTA Incident – Anthony Tyrone Gresham

Anthony Tyrone Gresham, with a criminal history, allegedly shot a 17-year-old at the MARTA Midtown station in Atlanta. The attack happened on June 5, resulting in serious injuries for the teenager who was taken to a hospital. Gresham was eventually captured after a wide manhunt.

Federal authorities charged Gresham with multiple offenses, including committing an act of violence with intent to cause serious bodily injury and illegal possession of ammunition.

2. Penn Station Stabbings – Hector Deleon

Hector Deleon was involved in a violent spree at Penn Station’s NJ Transit concourse in New York City, injuring five. This random attack caused panic among commuters. Deleon has a criminal record with prior arrests.

One of the Penn Station victims, Henry Obadiah, criticized lenient policies towards repeat offenders after his experience with Deleon.

3. Charlotte’s Lynx Blue Line Incident – Decarlos Brown Jr.

Decarlos Brown Jr. is accused of fatally stabbing 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on the Lynx Blue Line. Federal charges have been filed against him that could result in life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Brown’s violent history includes assaults and robberies, combined with a schizophrenia diagnosis. His competency for trial is under evaluation, delaying proceedings but keeping him in custody.
