White House Announces Strategic Oil Partnership with Venezuela

The White House has announced a strategic partnership with North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) aimed at tapping into Venezuela’s oil reserves. This move is part of President Donald Trump’s initiative to transform Venezuela’s oil industry into a significant asset for the Western Hemisphere.

According to the Trump administration, the U.S. will establish a private company in collaboration with NABEP, led by Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt. This comes as NABEP, already the second largest operator in Venezuela, plans to invest $100 billion in new oil infrastructure.

Under the agreement, Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez has granted 100-year rights over 17 oil fields, totaling 65 billion barrels in proven reserves. The Pentagon will hold a 35% stake in the joint venture, while the State Department will have rights to purchase 20% of the production at cost.

Betancourt emphasized the potential benefits of the deal, noting Venezuela’s natural resources and workforce. With over 5,000 employees and 10,000 contractors, Betancourt’s company aims to revitalize Venezuela’s oil sector.

The deal is expected to incur no cost to the U.S. government, which will have veto power over board appointments. Former energy advisers have warned of potential political risks, and analysts predict it may take years to revive Venezuela’s energy industry. President Trump acknowledged potential delays in price reductions at the pump, suggesting changes could take up to two years.

Senator Jack Reed and Representative Rick Crawford have expressed concerns and are seeking detailed information from the Trump administration. Reed criticized the deal for leveraging military involvement in a private venture, calling for transparency.

In response to rising gas prices, driven in part by the Iran conflict, Trump plans to meet with oil refiners to discuss expanding refining capacity. The White House sees increased refinery capabilities as key to processing Venezuelan oil and potentially lowering consumer prices.

The meeting will bring together Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Jarrod Agen from the National Energy Dominance Council to explore strategies for boosting America’s refining capacity.
