The White House experienced a brief lockdown on Saturday evening due to gunfire in the vicinity, which resulted in injuries to at least two individuals. Law enforcement officials reported that one person is in critical condition. The situation involves at least one suspect, though it remains uncertain if the other injured party is a suspect or a bystander.
According to senior officials, the U.S. Secret Service engaged with a suspect and discharged their weapons during the incident. As of now, there are no reports of injuries to any Secret Service agents.
The Secret Service acknowledged the situation on a social media platform, stating they are verifying reports of gunshots near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, working together with personnel on site.
An NBC News team present at the White House reported hearing 20 to 30 gunshots around 6:04 p.m. Secret Service agents advised reporters on the North Lawn to quickly enter the press briefing room. Armed agents were positioned outside the room while the lockdown, covering the White House grounds, was in effect. This lockdown was lifted at 6:46 p.m.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media that the FBI is assisting the Secret Service on the scene.
President Donald Trump was in the White House during the incident. Although Vice President JD Vance was confirmed to be present earlier in the day, his whereabouts at the time of the incident remain unclear.
