The Chicago White Sox pulled off a thrilling win in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians. In a pivotal moment during the sixth inning, Braden Montgomery stood ready at the plate with runners on second and third, trailing by one run. ‘I wasn’t playing the guessing game,’ Montgomery remarked. He came prepared for Erik Sabrowski’s toughest pitches.
Montgomery delivered with a two-run double to right field, helping to turn the game in favor of the Sox. The crowd of 32,050 at Progressive Field watched as Montgomery later scored on a single by Chase Meidroth, clinching a 4-3 win.
Pitcher Sean Burke showcased his strong performance, pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit and handling six strikeouts. Grant Taylor secured the game, managing the last four outs. The victory gave the Sox a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
The Guardians had initially taken the lead when a high bounce from Nathaniel Lowe with bases loaded led to José Ramírez scoring after an errant throw, putting them up 2-0. This marked the first time the Sox were trailing this postseason.
The White Sox offense gained momentum in the fourth inning. Kyle Teel achieved the team’s first hit, followed by a walk to Miguel Vargas. Munetaka Murakami, after battling back from an 0-2 count, singled to score Teel, reducing the gap to 2-1.
In the sixth inning, Vargas singled and advanced to second after Murakami’s groundout. With runners on after a wild pitch, Montgomery seized his chance at the first pitch, hitting a double that shifted the game’s dynamics.
‘I can’t even describe the energy,’ Montgomery shared about his impactful hit. His play not only brought joy to his teammates but also a lead. Venable remarked, ‘We’ve seen him do that, using the opposite field well.’ Chase Meidroth’s single expanded the lead to 4-2.
Despite a run-scoring triple by Jo Adell in the eighth, Taylor regrouped, assisted by Brenton Doyle’s remarkable catch at the wall, securing the narrow win. Montgomery acknowledged Doyle’s catch, emphasizing trust and skill on the field.
As the series moves to their home field, manager Will Venable expressed enthusiasm about performing in front of home supporters. Their support has energized the team consistently, both on the road and at home.
