The Chicago White Sox faced off against the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the American League wild-card series, initially maintaining a four-run lead. However, by the fifth inning, the gap narrowed to one run. The Sox made a strategic pitching change, bringing in Anthony Kay with two Astros on base and one out, confronting the formidable Yordan Alvarez. Kay successfully caused Alvarez to line out to left field, but the pressure remained.
A walk to Isaac Paredes loaded the bases, presenting Jose Altuve, a player who had already homered earlier, with a key opportunity. Altuve lined out to right field, shifting the momentum back to the Sox. Chase Meidroth then solidified this momentum with a three-run home run in the sixth inning, helping the Sox to a 7-3 victory on Wednesday in front of 36,015 fans at Daikin Park.
This victory secured a 2-0 sweep in the wild-card series, advancing the White Sox to the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians. The best-of-five series is set to begin Saturday at Progressive Field.
Early in the game, the White Sox demonstrated their dominance by scoring four runs in the first inning. Sam Antonacci hit a double that just evaded Yordan Alvarez’s reach. Kyle Teel followed up with a sharp single, bringing Antonacci home. Miguel Vargas took advantage of a fielding error from Nick Allen, while Andrew Benintendi provided an RBI single to further increase the score. Lucas Spence’s errant throw allowed an extra run, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Tristan Peters then contributed an RBI single, culminating in a 4-0 lead, a performance that chased Astros starting pitcher Hunter Brown after only two-thirds of an inning. Brown gave up four runs, with three earned, on five hits, totaling two strikeouts and one walk.
The Astros responded quickly, with Jeremy Peña hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Cam Smith added another in the second inning, narrowing the gap to 4-2. Altuve further closed the score with a home run at the beginning of the fourth inning, bringing it to 4-3.
Sean Burke, the White Sox starter, allowed these three runs on four hits, striking out five without permitting any walks in his four innings pitched. Anthony Kay later managed to escape a challenging situation in the fifth inning, after the Astros placed two on base against Huascar Brazobán.
Though the Astros persisted, the White Sox struggled offensively, failing to secure a base runner through the second to the fifth innings. However, Benintendi’s walk reinstated their offense in the sixth inning. Peters also walked, prompting a pitching change for the Astros. Bryan Abreu replaced Peter Lambert, yet Meidroth’s decisive three-run homer reestablished a significant lead. This victory marked the Sox’s first postseason series win since their 2005 World Series triumph.
