Wild-Caught vs Farm-Raised Fish: What to Know

At seafood counters across the country, you often face a choice between wild-caught and farm-raised fish. Wild-caught fish is typically viewed as the premium option, while farm-raised fish is generally more affordable and accessible.

However, some proponents of wild-caught fish argue that farm-raised seafood is of lower quality and more damaging to the environment. Despite these claims, farm-raised fish remains a popular option.

Understanding the Market

Mark Frisch, the executive vice president of seafood distributor BSF in Florida, points out a major misconception. He says, “Just like with any other protein, you have farms doing things certain ways, and you have other farms doing things variously.” He emphasizes the importance of knowing your source and doing some homework to make informed choices.

Consumers can feel overwhelmed by the wide variety of labels, certifications, and species available. Unlike beef or chicken, where USDA Grading provides a simple standard, seafood lacks an equivalent, which complicates consumer education.

Health Considerations

Dr. Kristin Struble, an Arizona-based pediatrician, highlights the nutritional differences. Wild fish generally offer a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio due to their natural diet.

Farm-raised fish are often fed corn, soy, and other plant-based feeds. To enhance their pink coloring, they may receive astaxanthin supplements, which the FDA considers safe.

Dr. Struble advises consumers to consider mercury levels in wild fish like bigeye tuna and swordfish. She recommends salmon, whether wild or responsibly farmed, as a low-mercury option.
