Democrats are seeing improved chances of holding the Wisconsin governor’s office, driven by prediction markets after moderate Democrat David Crowley’s win in the gubernatorial primary. Crowley, aiming to be the state’s first Black governor, narrowly triumphed over progressive state Representative Francesca Hong. His appeal as a candidate emerged as the stronger option to challenge U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, who secured the Republican primary and is endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
Crowley’s campaign faced initial setbacks as he stepped out of the race in July but quickly gained momentum following the endorsement from outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers. This revitalization occurred just two weeks later, ultimately enhancing his position for the November election.
Prediction markets experienced a swing in favor as Hong seemed poised to become the nominee. Public polling indicated her leading position over Crowley and other candidates had created Republican edge expectations. Nonetheless, the Associated Press declared Crowley as the winner early Wednesday when Hong conceded.

Democrats’ odds to win increased on predictions such as Kashi and Polymarket. By 8 a.m., Kashi indicated a 78 percent chance of Democrats retaining the governor’s office, a significant rise from 39.4 percent on Sunday. Republican likelihoods decreased correspondingly from 61.8 percent to 22 percent. Similar trends were visible on Polymarket; Democrats’ probability climbed to 77 percent, up from 41 percent a day prior.
Prediction markets function by allowing traders to buy and sell contracts tied to political outcomes, incorporating real-money wagers into probability estimates. Fluctuations arise from polling, fundraising activities, candidate progresses, and broader political trends.
Both the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball categorize the gubernatorial race as uncertain. Hence, both Crowley and Tiffany must aim to sway moderate and independent voters, which is crucial in a state known for close election outcomes.
Crowley project intends to unite diverse parties, addressing Democrats, Republicans, independents, and anyone invested in cooperative success for Wisconsin. His campaign manager, Garren Randolph, emphasized this collaborative ethos. Meanwhile, Tiffany echoed similar sentiments targeting varied electorate groups.
Mainstream Democrats support Crowley, fearing challenges from the party’s left might struggle against Republicans in the upcoming election. Concerns existed over Hong’s platform potentially appealing less to moderates and independents.
Jim Kessler of Third Way remarked the hesitancy hinged more on structural aspects of gubernatorial races than outright bias against Hong. The significance of a governor’s role demands voters consider policy impacts on taxes, businesses, schools, and safety.
Despite energizing left-focused constituents, Hong didn’t receive endorsements from national figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, although the latter supported other progressive candidates.
