Woman Captures Unexpected Sturgeon Encounter in Florida River

Tiffany Raulerson, a Florida resident, experienced an unexpected encounter while swimming in the Suwannee River. Known for its rich wildlife, the river surprised Raulerson when a fish suddenly leaped out of the water during her swim.

Raulerson aimed to record a serene video for her friends when her plans shifted dramatically. She noticed a rare sturgeon jumping near her. This fish is one of about 27 sturgeon species worldwide, with many endangered. Raulerson probably saw a Gulf sturgeon. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Suwannee River contains Florida’s largest Gulf sturgeon population.

Raulerson frequently visits the river with family, a place of special meaning. Though Gulf sturgeon appearances are usual, capturing the moment on video added uniqueness to the experience.

On September 8, Raulerson shared the video on her TikTok account @tiffanyraulerson6. It quickly gained over 38 million views. In the footage, she reacts with shock as the sturgeon jumps. She commented, “Ain’t no way, man,” on the screen, capturing the moment of disbelief.

Understanding Sturgeon

Sturgeon are ancient creatures, existing since the time of dinosaurs. Several species live in North America. The Gulf sturgeon can reach 6 to 8 feet in length and weigh up to 200 pounds. Such a sight can be startling for swimmers.

Despite their size, sturgeon do not prey on humans. Their diet includes small aquatic creatures, posing minimal threat to swimmers. However, their leaps, like the one in Raulerson’s video, can be hazardous if someone is nearby.

Swimmers encountering a sturgeon should maintain a safe distance and avoid touching or chasing it. If discomfort arises from its presence, exiting the water quietly can prevent unwanted interactions.
