Iuliia Mendel, former spokesperson for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urged him on Sunday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. She cited his past business and political ties in Russia as potential tools for negotiating peace.
Mendel, who worked with Zelenskyy from 2019 to 2021, highlighted his early career connections in Moscow. According to her, Zelenskyy earned his initial millions as an entertainer in Russia.
Mendel stated, “Zelenskyy performed frequently in Moscow and has connections with Putin’s elite.” She added that prior to his presidency, Zelenskyy found professional growth and financial success in Moscow.
He actually professionally grew in Moscow and earned his first millions in Moscow, and today he pretends that he has nothing in common with them,Mendel said.
With Ukraine, Russia, and the United States preparing for peace talks, Mendel suggested he leverage these ties. The negotiations, potentially taking place in Abu Dhabi or Switzerland, aim to facilitate direct discussions.
Before politics, Zelenskyy enjoyed a flourishing entertainment career, rising to fame with the comedy troupe Kvartal 95. He participated in Russian-language programs and films. Mendel recalled his continued work in Russia even after tensions rose in 2014.
David Dodson, a movie editor who worked with Zelenskyy, described him as a beloved figure in Russia. Concerns grew after the 2013-14 Maidan Revolution, but Dodson confirmed Zelenskyy’s popularity as a comedian in Russia.
In 2019, Zelenskyy pledged to relinquish ownership of a film studio in Russia following investigative revelations. His commitment to fighting corruption and advocating for peace led him to a landslide election victory.
Mendel expressed disappointment with the ongoing war, contrary to Zelenskyy’s original peace promises. She emphasized the need for a peace deal to uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The notion of Zelenskyy meeting Putin in Moscow remains contentious, especially with ongoing Russian aggression. The Ukrainian president rejected Moscow as a venue amid potential attacks.
Despite diplomatic obstacles, Mendel criticized the personal animosity between Zelenskyy and Putin as a major hindrance. She noted the war’s toll on Ukrainian infrastructure and its people.
Mendel praised President Donald Trump’s involvement, recognizing his consistent efforts to push for peace. She highlighted a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, brokered with assistance from Melania Trump.
The White House announced the ceasefire to aid humanitarian efforts, benefiting thousands in the affected region. Mendel admired Melania Trump’s role, pointing to her as a beacon of hope amid diplomatic challenges.
Mendel concluded by criticizing Andriy Yermak, a close ally of Zelenskyy, for influencing a confrontational diplomatic stance.
